Spanish mackerel is a smaller fish with tender, flaky and moist meat. It is high in omega-3 fatty acids, though not very popular in the U.S. because of its rich, prominent flavor and high oil content. Considering the fat content is not as high as some other mackerel species, Spanish Mack has a slightly less intense flavor than other types of mackerels, and a slightly darker meat. It also looks fantastic with a blue/silvery skin.

Spanish mackerel are found off the U.S. Atlantic coast and Gulf of Mexico.

U.S. populations were overfished in the 1980s but have rebuilt to a healthy size and fishing pressure is now sustainable. Spanish mackerel are primarily caught with cast nets, targeting schools of mackerel so there is little to no bycatch. This is a very sustainable choice!
