Mackerel are generally fast growing and fairly resilient to fishing pressure. Most populations are healthy and well managed. They are found in open water, typically near the surface so fishing gears used to target mackerel rarely come in contact with the seafloor. They often swim in schools, reducing the likelihood of bycatch.
