Cod are found throughout the northern Atlantic Ocean. In the U.S. cod are harvested off the coast of New England.
New England cod stocks have been under an immense amount of fishing pressure. New regulations have been implemented to rebuild these populations, including a hard limit on the amount of fish that can be caught each year. The cod population in the Gulf of Maine has successfully rebuilt to a somewhat healthy level but has not yet reached its target size. The Georges Bank population is still very depleted. This fish is harvested with trawl nets, longlines, and gillnets. Each of these gears can have negative impacts on the ecosystem, whether through bottom damage or bycatch, but there are many regulations in the U.S. designed to reduce these impacts.
