Description:

Alligator is a tough white meat that is often compared to chicken. This product is farmed in Louisiana. Farmed alligator meat is low in fat and high in protein.

American alligators are found in the coastal southeastern U.S., from Virginia to Texas. Florida and Louisiana dominate the alligator farming industry.

In the U.S., alligators were hunted and harvested for their skins from the late 1800s through mid 1900s, driving their populations to very low levels. In the 1970s, alligators were placed on the Endangered Species List and protected from hunting. The population eventually recovered and now many states allow recreational hunting of alligators on a limited basis. Alligator farming replaced commercial hunting of alligators, supplying skins and meat. Alligator eggs are collected from the wild, then incubated and raised on farms. Strict regulations are in place governing where, when and how many eggs may be collected. Alligator nesting is closely monitored and wetland landowners maintain their land as good alligator habitat, aiding in the recovery of the wild population.
